Google Toolbar PageRank, updated

Sunday, 27 July 2008

Matt Cutts on his blog, the first initiative of Google for webmasters to inform a future amendment. This time, Matt, the webmaster, would be updated as Google PageRank toolbar in a few days. This would reduce confusion and chaos, that the following rule, if an update is done by Google.
Finally, Google has done what Yahoo! It was designed for a long period of time with his updated. Giving webmasters, a warning about a possible modification. This would certainly be a Webmaster breathe, knowing that the high potential and defining their Web sites might be a witness, the results of an updated and not a mistake.

I'm busy with 3G iPhone

I have my new iPhone 3G and that's why I haven't sent a moment, I was busy with my new toy. The phone was worthwhile, according to 1.5 hours in The Apple Store, the second day of liberation.

It was funny to see that I am the only man Desi purchase of 3G iPhone. I saw several Desi uncle, aunties, fobby and students, as planned, but they saw the price of the aircraft and turned. Some of them were in harmony for a moment before me, and if a representative of Apple, have come all in the line above iPhone 3G alone, it gave its position on the line and left.

As I said earlier, the phone is incredible, but like all human beings are created, they are machines, with its weaknesses. The iPhone 3G duration of the battery is terrible, when the Wi-Fi, 3G port or location for GPS monitoring services are in place. I was lucky, the power of the phone was so far that the latter measure, but it also provides, I buy a car charger

Free and Fair Elections

Saturday, 26 July 2008

Pakistan is slow, even if reluctantly on the road to universal suffrage February 18, 2008. All major parties have agreed to participate in elections while maintaining pressure on the government demanding the holding of free and fair elections. Statements PPP, PML (N) and PML (Q) The conduct indicate that the elections are not reaching the end of the policy is a stable environment in which people can feel safe and their lives. PPP, co-chairman Asif Ali Zardari has done so far to say that the next government is formed PPP with the victory of elections. PML (N) Nawaz Sharrif president has repeatedly shown that they do not accept the leadership of President Pervez Musharraf. PML (Q) is essential for their refusal negative are the slogans of the campaign replica Asif Ali Zardari. In this context, the nation is nervous out that the next phase of their lives volatile, while prices of basic raw materials are sky-rocketing beyond the reach of young people. The question, nobody is ready to answer is how you define a free and fair election?

Some foreign powers, Pakistan, are well aware that free and fair elections could lead to results that are not in their interest. You've already lived through this scenario in Algeria, Palestine, Lebanon and Turkey, where Islamic political parties won broad support in elections. For these powers, it is preferable to their responsibility on the government distorted by a democracy, elections rigging rather face the prospect of becoming familiar with a conservative force, the people s mandate. In a country afflicted by poverty, it is not difficult for them to go to buy small amounts people are willing to familiarize themselves with a fair election. The foreign powers are fed up with networks in the country, composed of locals, that the execution of this strategy is not too difficult.

The tradition of Pakistan is such that winning party, it is understood they remain in power forever and could not fight against the losers. We have seen this game for two mandates Nawaz Shariff and Benazir Bhutto, if two of them went to the throat of another. If these two leaders decided to work together, there was a feeling, finally, it is certain number of decency after the elections, but it seems that the old tradition of vengeance must be repeated. This sense of survival of the fittest creates an environment in which a choice but to lose a death warrant. Unless such hostility has subsided, we can not wait until the stability of institutions. Our leaders have to learn to live loss and waiting for their term in the upcoming elections.

In this context, it is not ideological agreement between the group leaders and components, it is difficult to believe that elections are the solution for nationproblem. We agreed that the country belongs to us all and we must work together to build it. A stable government is one of the components necessary for a nation's prosperity and progress. All of us, if a policeman, a teacher, a guide and a strong need to understand that all actions unfair in their hours of classes, damage to the nation. Then, if the leaders do not accept the results, we can all adjourn to clarify that the material is quite sufficient. Either they work together or the nation will it be to replace group leader, can work together.

Name Suggestions of Business

Where do you go to find Name suggestions? You can 't just read a book, as a company and expect that everyone knows"it is simply too much. That is the question of integration, come with a business plan, if investors, Web sites, secure areas "you get the idea. One thing that I didn 't believes, however, was finding the right company.
He months of fruitless name of the company before seeking any idea I'd really what I do. I had the company of all the suggestions, I met, but none of them were really good. The recruitment of a company to obtain suggestions name of the company seemed like a stupid idea, me first, but one of my friends and partners told me, the reflections on them in a different way. For him, the name of the company, a proposal is only part of the extensive branding and marketing strategy. Your activity is not only to sell the products of man, work for you, or the physical location where it takes place. These cases, see it as humans. Where there proposed the name is the first step to project the right image business decisions.
In the end, sometimes good ideas name of the company come from most people, unlikely. Our journey with the marketing and advertising agency was pointless and, at the end, we just managed to squander several thousand dollars to nothing. In his desperation, turned to me some very unlikely that people give me the company suggestions. I turned around my family and friends. They came with the best company.
I will come back again in my next post

A Memory

Monday, 14 July 2008

By:Erin Nuttall
Although hard to believe, it has been almost nine years since my Grandpa passed away. I've lost other family members before, but none left an impact on my life such as him. He was more than a Grandpa to me, he was a substitute parent and the friend I knew I could always count on.

In the spring of 1999 my family received the devastating news that Grandpa had cancer. I was fifteen years old at the time, but what small amount of child I had left in me begged and pleaded for the fairy tale ending, that my Grandpa was invincible. He had always been in my life, how could that change?

School was almost done for the year and I decided that my place was with him. Immediately following my last class I packed up my things and moved into my Grandparents house.

Looking back on it now I can honestly say that it was the best summer of my life. Although it was the hardest at many moments, I had more smiles and laughter in those nine weeks than I could have hoped for. Maybe it was due to the chilling sadness of the summers surroundings, my mind seemed to burn certain images into memory. I have this perfect recollection of Grandpa sitting on the couch watching the eleven o'clock news, as I walked up beside him holding an old alarm clock he had given me, he turns to see me with his chin ever so slightly pressed downward into his chest in an attempt to peer over his large brown rimmed glasses, and then a smile creeps across his face.

It's one of those smiles that curves right up, making me laugh a little to myself because it almost reminds me of a clown smile, then something tells me he's doing it on purpose. He reaches his hands out to me and I offer him the clock. You see, that clock had always been his and the key on the back that set the alarm was just as stiff as the clock was old. My little fingers just weren't strong enough to turn it, so every night I would go downstairs to my room, get ready for bed, collect the clock and take it to him...because his fingers did have the strength....and every night he would smile at me, take the clock and set the alarm.

I suppose part of me believed that as long as his fingers were strong enough to turn that key, he was strong enough to keep fighting, strong enough to stay with me.

The memory of that night, although only a mere fraction of the time we had spent together, means more to me than words can express. To know the hardship he was enduring through his fight with cancer, that such a simple act could bring such a smile to his face. That in that moment, through the smile we both shared, we were together and we were okay.

The One-Plot Wonder

by: Michael LaRocca

Back in the mid to late 1980s I was a security guard. The pay was lousy, but it gave me many hours in seclusion to write short stories and novels. However, I usually worked over 80 hours a week. No one can write that much. Well, at least not me. Thus I discovered the joys of my local libraries.

Recently, I decided to look up an author who gave me great pleasure in those days. Most of his books are now out of print, I've learned, even the one that became a movie.

I found that two of his were books available, so I ordered them. One I'd enjoyed before. The other was a straight thriller from the days before he created the "Appleton Porter" spy spoofs, re-released in 2001 in POD. I didn't know this before it arrived at my home in China.

Since I'm giving away THE plot spoiler, I won't identify the author or title.

A man who deeply loves his wife buys her a hotel outside London. She is very happy there, at first. This is a fine suspenseful read as she notes oddities and eventually appears to be losing her mind and such. Suicides, an eventual murder. Finally, her husband pays a doctor to kill her.

The husband arranged all this, we learn at the end, because she was dying of a horrible and incurable illness. Rather than let her suffer the indignity, he tries to give her some final days filled with wonderful memories. He never realizes that he ended her days with a living hell.

The writing was fine, aside from some stupid typos of the sort common in unedited POD titles. He's obviously a sincere, hard-working, talented author. The plot was wholly consistent and everything "worked."

So why is it a weak book? Because the plot I described is all there is. It's a one-plot wonder.

As an author, if you find yourself floundering, if you find your work-in-progress failing to make progress, ask yourself. Is it a one-plot wonder?

Here are some best sellers I've read over the past thirty years.

During the Cold War, a Soviet commander steals a top-secret submarine and tries to defect to the US with it. A good and idealistic young law graduate accepts a job too good to be true, only to eventually learn he's working for the Mafia. An alcoholic ex-author and his family become caretakers at an old Maine hotel, alone during the winter, and he eventually goes nuts. A US President declares war on drug dealers, a "clear and present danger" to national security. A crippled author is kidnapped by the ultimate fan.

I choose these titles because all were made into movies I've seen. None of my plot summaries are wrong. But with some of those novels, there are many more plots and subplots at work. These are the novels that didn't always translate well to the big screen due to time constraints and/or loss of non-objective voice.

I love a well-conceived "what if" scenario, and none of these books lack that. But more importantly, I love a novel that's rich with the fabric of life. That's where multiple plots come into play. Very rarely will a movie capture this as well as a novel can.

A one-plot wonder is a boring read. It's a boring write. It's not realistic. And, it's a hard sell. All your eggs are in one basket. If the editor isn't enthralled with that sole plot, you aren't published. If the reviewer isn't enthralled with that sole plot, he pans you. If the potential reader isn't enthralled with that sole plot, he doesn't buy your book. Or if he does, maybe you don't get any repeat business from him. You don't get mine.

Plus, we should be setting the bar a bit higher for ourselves anyway. We entertain, but we also enlighten and educate. Or at the very least, provide needed escape. But it's hard to escape to a one-plot wonder. I keep taking coffee breaks between chapters.

I single out no writing medium with this. All are guilty. Come on, Terminator 2 has more subplots than many successful books these days. And it's not just "these days," incidentally. The title I reviewed early in this article is from 1979. Published, successful, well-written, flat.

Craftsmanship is fine. Craftsmanship is wonderful to behold. Craftsmanship is a necessity. But, it's not enough.

Do you want to build a horse barn that never leaks or do you want to build a two-story A-frame home that survives five hurricanes undamaged? My carpenter did the latter and I can't do the former. But if I had the ability to build a leak-proof barn, I certainly wouldn't limit myself to barns. I'd try to build houses.

I'm not talking about weighty tomes. Times change, readers change, and most people don't read them any more. What was once considered gripping is now considered boring.

But one-plot wonders also bore readers. They read it, enjoy it moderately, then go look for something else to do. There's little satisfaction at the end. Rarely the big "wow" that probably made you start writing in the first place.

I'm talking about shooting for five stars instead of two or three. I'm talking about richness of story, raising the standard, writing your absolute best instead of settling for adequate.

I risk oversimplification here, but I'm seeing far too many one-plot wonders. People are buying them, too. But it's time for us, the authors, to quit writing them.

Dead Language

by: Terry J. Coyier

Words remain the single most important device poets have at their disposal. Without them, we have nothing. With them, we can construct anything. But, word choice is crucial, and it either builds a sturdy bridge, providing the reader with a safe crossing into your world, where they can delight their senses in a transforming poetic experience, or it’s merely scattered pieces of wood that the reader must then attempt to leap between, therefore, being unable to enjoy the ambiance and scenery along the way. If, in your attempt, you throw in what I like to call dead language, you will completely rip your reader out of the scene and into another, thus ruining the experience even further.

Allow me to explain what I mean by “dead language” (not to be confused with extinct language). As you know, each word includes denotation (the most direct or literal meaning) and connotation (the indirect, implied or associated meaning). As writers we must be aware of these as we write and realize that connotation plays an extremely large role in how readers perceive our work. Of course, I realize that you cannot write with everyone in mind; that would be impossible, but we must take into account that some wording is, in fact, so famous that it is basically now dead language. Why is it dead? Simply because when a large population of people read it, they will immediately be torn away from the scene you are creating and transported to another time and place, thus killing the moment.

This very thing happened to me just the other day while brainstorming with a friend for article topics. Originally this article was going to be on tough poetry forms, as a follow-up to my last article. As we discussed difficult forms, my friend sent me one of his poems to read. Right in the middle of the poem was the innocent, two-word phrase “grassy knoll.” To some, this means nothing. To a gal, living in Dallas, even though I wasn’t born until after 1963, the grassy knoll means one thing to me…the conspiracy around the assassination of John F. Kennedy. It means this to many people, not just me (just check Wikipedia). So, as I read along this lovely poem, in a fraction of a second, in my head, I was watching the footage of JFK’s motorcade and seeing him get shot – something I have seen many times in television documentaries.

So, what are some of these dead language phrases? Here are just a few:

~I have a dream (Martin Luther King Jr.)
~Finest hour (Winston Churchill)
~Fear itself (Franklin Delano Roosevelt)
~Ask not (John F. Kennedy)
~One small step (Neil Armstrong)
~Tear down this wall (Ronald Reagan)

To hear recordings of some of these wonderful words go to:

http://instruct1.cit.cornell.edu/courses/comm201e/speech.html (a couple short clips)
http://www.americanrhetoric.com/top100speechesall.html (top 100 speeches)

Some of these you may or may not recognize. Many others exist and many are being created as we live today. I’ve stuck to historical phrases because those were most familiar to me, but popular phrases can come from anywhere. I remember things like “Make my day” (Clint Eastwood as Dirty Harry) and if I saw that in a poem would surely hear him saying the words to me. The point is, you simply must keep your audience in mind as you write and try to not use dead language.

SEO Best Practices: How Blogs Can Break Or Make Your Search Engine Optimization Strategy

by: Jon Rognerud

Blogs - Structure and Layout

I work in the field of Search Engine Optimization. It has a wide range of options, from the technical to the more strategic. Tons of discussions are found on off-page and on-page factors, latent semantic analysis, content scope, quality, HTML/CSS development, site navigational structure, spamdexing, 301 redirects, plagiarism, link strategies, directories, blogs, search engine news, email marketing tips & online (internet) marketing. Most all of the top 10 SEO firms out there agree that blogs are a "must" for driving traffic and get established in the Internet community.

There is a right way, and a wrong way. We'll discuss these below.

Be warned - too many folks out there are thinking about "how to outbeat the search engines" and use the latest-and-greatest (blogs) to elevate their rankings, essentially via content and blog spam. Blogs are a powerful way to get seen by the search bots. Blogger (Google's own) is an important key to the puzzle, but there are many.

THE UN-OFFICIAL TOP 7 BLOGGING BEST PRACTICES FOR SEO

Start here, begin a quick review of the world's top blogs:
http://www.technorati.com/pop/blogs (the gorilla blog listings - updated daily)
http://www.problogger.net (this guy makes 16,000 USD / monthly)
http://microsaw.stikipad.com (web 2.0 blogs and news)

Get an account - it's free. log in - and - don't start! What? No, you must first continue by scanning the list above and get a sense for what people are writing about. This could be more generic at first, but start looking to yourself. What do you know? What do people come to you for? Anything that you specialize in? (Hint: don't think "how can I sell this" - but "how can I share this?") You'll also learn how to use trackback functions to allow other people to be notified. Permalinks are great for SEO and should be used where appropriate. So, now you learned something big: be yourself!

Think about an interesting headline. You don't need to be copywriter, but you should think about your headline and the topic at hand. More importantly, is it something that you are passionate about, or can contribute something to? It's ok to spend some time here, writer's block can come up. Think about other sites, can you re-write their UVP (unique value proposition)? How would you write yours (thinking theme here). What I've found to work is simply sit back and start talking as if you were discussing a (hot) topic with a friend, and then breaking it out into sub-groups from there.

Writing tips: casual, friendly and interesting (meaning you have something to write and you don't copy others) works well in blogs. Make sure you stay on topic and that you are truthful. Would you lie to your mother? Of course not - then think about this when you are writing online (and she will not come after you). Yahoo's blogging policy is a good one: "Be respectful of your colleagues, get your facts straight, provide context to your argument, and engage in private feedback." Also, make sure to include images (flickr) and video (youtube, google video) where you can. Make the images rich and colorful, don't worry about sizing too much.

Committment, persistence and disciplin. Sound like an extract from Jim Rohn or Anthony Robbins? Well, they probably are - but it applies to most of the things you do in life. So be it with blogging. Carve out 1/2-1 hour every day to nurture to your blog business. Think of it as your morning ritual - right after you have attended to your family and other duties. Plus, often you are not going to be in writing mode - but rather, maintenance mode - reviewing and responding to other blogger's input.

Search engines start picking up your blog, and traffic increases. Be prepared and if it gets out of hand, be able to manage that too. I'm not simply talking about traffic, but as others join and comment, you may need to defend your stance, including admitting mistakes if / when you make them. Folks appreciate other folks who are big enough to admit mistakes if it gets there. For example, you may have folks who don't like you - even if you're Bill Gates. This guy created a Corporate Weblog Manifesto that I found interesting.

Run and host your own blog service. More expensive, but this could have a large impact on your ability to control not only the content, but custom HTML layouts, code and information architecture that are important to search engines. You can offer this as a service to others in your niche market. http://businesslogs.com/ is a great resource to use for starting this process, and more hands-on development companies like http://www.leveltendesign.com/ can be an option for you. Keep in mind that the market has developed niche-companies, from real-estate to healthcare, and you should research those specifically.

If you have writer's block - make sure to read the next section, content is important for Search Engine Optimization - be on top of it.

How To Be Creative RE: Blogs (and SEO)

Here are some tips about being creative with blogs. Funny, but poignant.
(Taken from http://www.gapingvoid.com/)

Ignore everybody.

The idea doesn't have to be big. It just has to change the world.

Put the hours in.

If your biz plan depends on you suddenly being "discovered" by some big shot, your plan will probably fail.

You are responsible for your own experience.

Everyone is born creative; everyone is given a box of crayons in kindergarten.

Keep your day job.

Companies that squelch creativity can no longer compete with companies that champion creativity.

Everybody has their own private Mount Everest they were put on this earth to climb.

The more talented somebody is, the less they need the props.

Don't try to stand out from the crowd; avoid crowds altogether.

If you accept the pain, it cannot hurt you.

Never compare your inside with somebody else's outside.

Dying young is overrated.

The most important thing a creative person can learn professionally is where to draw the red line that separates what you are willing to do, and what you are not.

The world is changing.

Merit can be bought. Passion can't.

Avoid the Watercooler Gang.

Sing in your own voice.

The choice of media is irrelevant.

Selling out is harder than it looks.

Nobody cares. Do it for yourself.

Worrying about "Commercial vs. Artistic" is a complete waste of time.

Don?t worry about finding inspiration. It comes eventually.

You have to find your own schtick.

Write from the heart.

The best way to get approval is not to need it.

Power is never given. Power is taken.

Whatever choice you make, The Devil gets his due eventually.

The hardest part of being creative is getting used to it.

Remain frugal.

Voila - that's it, there you have it. Watch how the search engines will start picking up your content. You can run tools to see how you are ranking, how often you are showing up in the search engines. We like www.UrlTrends.com as a simple beginner starting point. However, it's not 100% accurate, other SEO tools can provide more detail.

Keep your content fresh, updates daily is preferred - and definitely once a week and your search engine marketing (which includes search engine optimization) will become more visible than it was just last week. Then, use http://pingomatic.com/ to alert search engines that you have made updates. It's a free service, and will help your visibility.

To Get Paid What You Are Worth, Don’t Say a Word

by: Kathleen Poole

If you’re like most freelance copywriters and other solo entrepreneurs, you get rattled when it’s time to talk about money with your clients. You may feel like you are being greedy or sleazy, or you might worry that your fees are too high or too low. Inevitably, though, you must state a price for your service or product. And if you’re serious about making a good living in your solo enterprise, you must command a reasonably healthy price.

After 20 years as a freelance copywriter, I feel very comfortable stating my fees. In fact, I even enjoy it. With some practice, you may grow to enjoy it, too. And you’ll certainly reap economic rewards if you do it right.

Stating a good fee for a project is a skill you can learn. I can’t teach you everything you need to know about it in one brief article. But I can give you what I think is the number one rule for successful fee-stating:

After you tell a client your desired fee, stop talking. The first one who talks loses.

Preferably, the last word you say should be the dollar figure. So try to explain everything you will provide before you state your fee.

Here’s an example:

“Mr. Smith, I’m very excited about working on your company’s print brochure. I will gather all the information, write the complete copy, and make up to two rounds of any changes you request that substantially alter your original intent. I’ll also proofread the brochure copy before it’s printed. My all-inclusive fee for the project is $750.”

Don’t elaborate. Don’t make excuses. And above all else, don’t say, “Is that okay?” Just stop talking.

You’ll probably sit through a period of silence for a minute or two...although it may seem like hours. But don’t say a word, no matter how uncomfortable you feel. The ball is in the client’s court. If you can hold your tongue, you are much more likely to get the fee you want...or at least something close to it.

During the silence, your client may be thinking: Is that a fair price? Can I afford it? Should I make a counteroffer?

While the client ponders your fee, stay silent. You want the client to talk first, because that will give you the edge. If you talk first, you give the edge away.

Eventually the client—who is probably just as uncomfortable about the silence—will say something. Then you can respond. Perhaps you’ll need to negotiate because the client feels the fee is over his or her budget. The client may ask a question or two. Or maybe the client will say, “Okay.”

By the way, if the client quickly says something like “Great!” or “That sounds very reasonable,” your fee is too low. You can’t go back and ask for more money, but you can make a note of the mistake so you’ll be less likely to make it again in the future.

Get paid what you are worth. To help ensure that, keep your power with the sacred silence that comes after you state your fee. And remember the cardinal fee-stating rule: The first one who talks loses (the edge, that is).

Word Frequency Analysis as a means to improve writing quality

by: John Tello

In the old times of Windows 1.0 back in the 1980’s there was a tool called Word Frequency that came with the MS Word distribution package. As someone who uses English as a second language I used it heavily, because it helped me to improve my vocabulary and to correct misspellings beyond the capacity of the available spelling checkers. That MS Word add-on created a list of all the words in a document, ordered by frequency. It made it easy to detect overuse and/or abuse of a certain word or expression. The little used words were also of help, because sometimes I wrote Thomson instead of Thompson, car instead of cart, or similar errors that the spelling checker does not detect.

Frequency analysis can also be used as a means to establish the “signature” of a certain author, the cultural level of the writer, its use of slang or technical jargon, and other writing features. It is possible to extrapolate the number of words used in a certain text to the total vocabulary of a person. Frequency analysis can accuse some writers to have the vocabulary of a 10-year-old. Or the word-richness of a Chinese-born 2nd year English student.

Frequency analysis combined with a synonym dictionary, as provided in currently available “synonymizer” software, can help writers to enrich its lexicon and avoid abuse of certain expressions.

It is also a means to avoid producing identical text for those who need to make its text different from a source. For instance, a web content writer that needs to fill many similar but not identical pages, and students who want to avoid plagiarism detection and accusation. Rightly or wrongly.

Plagiarism detection also makes use of frequency analysis, because comparison of a given text with the whole Web contents is a major task, and the detection system does not know where to look and where to start. Thus, analysing the word frequency can give some clue on the writing style and the authorship of a given text, without indexing the whole thing.

Search engines use word frequency to establish the subject of web pages. They developed complex linguistic analysis in order to classify pages by subject without human intervention. In turn, webmasters do the same, to try to fool search engines into assigning high keyword relevance to the pages they create. For instance, using a word with a 3% frequency gives a text good relevance on that word (or keyword, in a search engine context). A 10% frequency is still OK, but it is close to “keyword stuffing”, a technique used by webmasters who try to force their websites into the top places of the search engines. Keyword stuffing is penalized by the search engines, and needs to be prevented by smart use of synonyms. Either with synonymizer software or good writing skills.

This article, for instance, has the following Word Frequency : word : 9, frequency : 7, used : 6, not : 6, search : 6, text: 6, engines: 6, analysis: 5, can: 5, use: 5 ... ...

I could have edited the text after the analysis, to avoid intensive use of “word” and “frequency” for linguistic purposes. However, it is OK for Search Engine Optimization purposes (attempting to make this article more findable by Google and Yahoo).

Are there any serious writers that still avoid the use of a wired computer? Probably not many can avoid using the Web and the search engines to find the correct word, the most used expression, to perform spelling or grammar checking. Checking word usage in Google is faster and more efficient than using a dictionary, either in paper, disc or the Web. The search engines list every word ever written, not only the well-written words as dictionaries do.

Be prepared to have your texts analysed for word frequency, educational level, plagiarism, technicality, jargon usage and other parameters, in addition to old-fashioned spelling.

According to these tendencies, the ultimate challenge for a job candidate would be to write an essay with paper and pen. Most of us are not prepared to pass such a test.

I expect not to see synonymized versions of this article...

How to Write Articles Quickly

by: Valerie Dansereau

One of the best ways to promote your website or blog is through article marketing. Learning to write articles quickly is a skill you have to master to accomplish this.

Many website owners make article writing a lot more complicated than it has to be. When writing for websites, remember first of all that people online are scanning web pages, not reading every word, so there is no need to spend hours making every word perfect.

Your content isn’t going to be totally unique, no matter what you write about. Every topic you can think about has already been written about by someone else. Think about it – every newsworthy event is covered by CNN, NBC, ABC, etc. Every network and every newspaper are all covering the exact same event or topic, just in different words.

The fact is, there are no new topics. Your job is to take what’s already been written and improve on it by injecting your own comments and personality.

One way to do research quickly is by inputting the topic you want to write about into a search engine. Choose three or four matches and read these articles thoroughly, taking notes.

Or, other places for quick research include article directories, forums and yahoo answers. By reading what people are asking in yahoo answers, you will learn what information people are looking for.

Amazon.com provides some great tools for quick research. By choosing a few top-selling books on a given topic, you can research quickly by browsing a book’s table of contents, the back cover of the book and even an excerpt.

Once you have taken sufficient notes, it’s time to put your article together. Write an outline of the important points you want to make in your article. Then write the article without looking back at the other articles. This is nothing more than the same work you did in high school writing book reports. Most of us have written quite a few book reports in our lifetime, and in those days many of us put ourselves through the unnecessary stress of cutting it too close to deadlines. That means we already know how to write and research quickly!

Basically, we need to decide what we’re going to accomplish and when. If we intend to write an article a day, then we have to stay glued to our computer until we complete that task. If we want to get it done in half an hour or less, this is another goal to work toward. Practice will definitely lead to improvement.

Article marketing is one of the best forms of free advertising there is. Learning to write articles quickly is an easily learned skill that will help us get the most out of article marketing.

Bathroom Renovation Ideas – Preparation and Inspiration

by: Madonna Jeffries

Are you tired of the look of your current bathroom layout and feel that it needs a total upgrade? If so you are one of the many people who don’t particularly like the way their bathroom looks. The bathroom is probably the most overlooked room in your home because most people do not feel that the amount of time they spend there warrants the expenditure of money or energy on undertaking a renovation project.

This is in fact quite wrong as a recent study indicates that women will, on average, spend the equivalent of 2 years and 9 months of their lives standing in front of their bathroom mirror fixing their make up and ensuring that they look 'just right' before venturing out of the house.

In reality the bathroom home improvement is easily the best place to start you renovation work as you can accomplish quite a transformation with a little imagination, a splash of flair and, of course, a few basic building skills. If you are interested in upgrading your bathroom, but really don’t know where to start, do some research so you can consider the options that are open to you.

The ease of undertaking a bathroom renovation is due to the fact that the average bathroom is quite small in size and therefore a fairly modest remodeling program will have some marked results. Most bathroom renovation ideas are often centered on a replacement of wall and floor tiles as well as the inclusion of new fixtures and fittings. Don’t be put off attempting the project if one of your bathroom renovation ideas includes enlarging the space. The chances are that extending the area of you bathroom will not be too difficult as it could be as simple as removing an adjacent closet or a dividing wall. You will be amazed at how even a relatively small increase of the bathroom area can have a remarkable effect on the look and feel of the room.

Summon Up The Courage And Implement Your Bathroom Renovation Ideas!

Don’t be put off by the big jobs - stripping down the entire bathroom may look like a complicated job but, in all reality, it is quite simple and requires little more than some hard labor by you (and maybe a friend or two). If you are ever going to introduce some good bathroom renovation ideas then you have to get out of your comfort zone and learn some of the skills needed to undertake the work.

If you really are a novice when it comes to renovation work, then it may be in your best interest to engage a professional builder for some aspects of the job. This way you can observe how he approaches the job and you should also be able to throw a few relevant questions his way. Take time and study how to operate the particular power tools needed on the job. Quite often you can download from the internet some quite well presented instructional guides which show you how to use various power tools.

Before you start the bathroom home improvement ensure that you put together a realistic costing for your bathroom renovation. Check some of the online specialty bathroom websites and put together a pricing list for the fixtures such as vanity, light and toilet fittings. We all dream about having gold taps and features in our bathrooms, however, the reality check is that the cost for most people would be prohibitive and well beyond their budget.

When deciding on the look of your bathroom just remember that for many people the bathroom is a private get-away where they like to relax and have a little solitude. If you want to create a sense of tranquility then you should consider going with a classic style that incorporates crisp colors with minimal clutter. By doing this you can create a soft feeling of light and space so that your bathroom becomes a welcoming retreat. If, however, you want to make a statement and don’t particularly want to have to queue to get into your bathroom then go crazy with your creativity and splash around as much color as you like.

Before your bathroom remodeling ideas get the better of you be aware that the whole project will take some time and, unless you engage a professional or take time off from work, there may be some inconvenience while you squeeze the work in at night or during the weekends.

A Word Of Caution

Try to adopt a patient approach and don’t be put off if you initially make a few small mistakes. Even the experts make mistakes at times and even the best bathroom renovation ideas have some inherent problems that will need some corrective action at a later date. Be patient and most importantly, be happy with the thought you’re your workable bathroom renovation ideas are not so difficult after all. With a little forward planning and creativity your new look private oasis can transform before your eyes.

Troubleshooting your Cable Box

by: Nick Smith

Unless you’ve recently moved from Alaska to Texas and you’re feeling a little homesick, chances are that the last thing you want to see when you turn on your TV is snow. Combine a snowy screen with that loud, obnoxious static sound, and you’ve got a problem on your hands. Fortunately you don’t have to be techie to fix your cable box – just follow these simple troubleshooting steps to get picture back in no time.

Cable Box Basics

Make sure your cable box is plugged in. I know that sounds silly, but after troubleshooting these things over the phone professionally, you can trust me on this one. Save yourself the time and embarrassment of calling a professional just to have them tell you to plug it in. That goes for the rest of the essential equipment as well (i.e. TV, VCR or DVR if you’re running the signal through one, etc.). It wouldn’t hurt to make sure the TV is on the correct channel – usually channel 3 or 4 or one of the input channels.

Make sure all the cables are connected. Even if you’re TV and cable box are both turned on, you won’t see a picture unless they are connected. Check each connection to ensure it is tight and that none of the wires or connecting pieces is damaged. Also check to see that the connections are all correct – meaning, video and audio should be going out of your cable or satellite box to your TV “in” ports. The signal should follow a logical path. If the connections are correct but you’re still not seeing any picture, replace the cables to see if that solves the problem. If you’re running the signal through a DVR or VCR and having problems, skip the middle man and plug the cables straight from the box to the TV. If you get a picture you know you’re problem is in the VCR.

After making sure everything is on and the cable connections are all correct, try rebooting your system. Each company’s receivers have different methods of rebooting, but one fairly universal way is to unplug the box for 10 to 20 seconds and then plug it back in. Do not just turn the box off and back on again – you’ll need to actually pull the plug out of the wall and then put it back in again. Once the cable box is plugged back in, turn the power on and cross your fingers. If you’re still not receiving any picture, unplug the receiver again for up to one minute and then plug it back in. This may be tedious and time-consuming, especially when you’re missing the fight of the year or the Super Bowl, but give it the full minute – you’ll spend less time doing it yourself than you will waiting for a repairman to come out and fix it.

Fuzzy Picture or Sound

If you are getting a picture but no sound; or sound but no picture; or a fuzzy picture or sound, recheck the cable connections to make sure they are tightened and that the wires or connecting pieces are undamaged. Poor picture or sound is typically caused by one of three problems: poor wire connections, signal interference, or TV settings.

Going outside to make sure nothing is interfering with your signal will help with the second problem. Of course, if you have underground cables there is not much you can do about making sure they are clear of interference (that’s read, “Your neighbor cut through it while gardening”). If you have a satellite dish, know that excessive rain or snow buildup on the dish can cause signal interference. Use caution when checking your dish, especially if it is on your roof or some other hard-to-reach place around your house. The installer should have verified that no trees or other objects would interfere with your signal from the satellites, but take a quick look around to see if new foliage is blocking the signal. If it is not on your property, do not cut or remove anything without prior permission from the property owner.

Finally, adjusting your TV settings can help when you are receiving a clear signal and all the connections are fine. Horizontal and vertical settings are the adjustments that most often need to be made, but consulting your owner’s manual can give you a better indication of other settings that can be tweaked.

Troubleshooting requires patience, so make some lemonade, roll up your sleeves, and get started. If none of these suggestions work (9 times out of 10 they will), contact your service provider. They may have additional troubleshooting steps or resources they can make available to you to get your cable or satellite TV up and running.

Radiant Heat - Red Hot Retrofit

by: Sam Streubel

Red hot as in sales, that is. The reasons behind the increasing popularity of radiant heat panels are ease of installation, quick warm up, dust free heat, and low cost relative to other retrofit heating systems.

For the same price as a pellet stove, you could heat a 1,500 square foot home and not have to deal with locating, storing, and lugging 40 pound bags of wood pellets.

A U.S. Department of Energy sponsored study concluded that radiant heat panels were 52% less expensive to operate than electric baseboard heat and 33% more cost effective air to air heat pumps. The study concluded that “energy savings would be obtainable in a great portion of U.S. households”.

Radiant heat panels manufactured by Enerjoy are about 1 inch thick, and range in size from 2’x2’ to 2’x8’. They are textured to look like the ceiling and can painted to match the room’s décor with quality water based acrylic paint.

The panels operate at 150-170 degrees F. and radiate heat to objects and people in the room. The panel itself reaches operating temperature in only three to five minutes.

Advantages of Radiant Heat Panels

Heat loss from ducts, even insulated ones, reduces the efficiency of forced air systems. Additional leakage is created by the internal air pressure generated by forced air systems. No duct, No pressure, no leakage problems.

Since the need for a blower to circulate heat is eliminated, so is the cost of electricity to the blower motor. Without a blower, there are no filters that need to be replaced.

Heating without moving air also eliminates drafts and prevents dust and pollen from circulating while maintaining the air’s moisture content.

Radiant heat panels require no maintenance or service because there are no moving parts.

With separate thermostats for each room, zoned heating is easy as turning a light switch on and off. Significant energy savings can be realized by allowing only the occupied areas to be heated. The quick response time radiant panels will return an unoccupied room to a comfortable temperature in minutes.

Radiant Heat Panel Applications

Radiant heat panels are an excellent source of heat for bathrooms (no more foggy mirrors), log homes, gazebos, screened in porches and stables. If you’re heating a greenhouse, radiant heat will protect your plants in the absence of sunlight by maintaining root temperatures.

Replacing a wood stove with ceiling mounted panels in auxiliary buildings such as workshops or studios allows the use of all available floor space.

Radiant Heat Panel Installation and Cost

The low amperage requirements for ceiling heat panels can usually be provided by existing 120 or 240 volt circuits. The 30%-70% wattage reduction over electric baseboard heating eliminates the need for dedicated wiring. Wherever a single panel is installed, the existing 120 volt capacity circuit is usually adequate for the additional load.

Installation of radiant heat panels typically cost between $1.25 and $1.50 per square foot of heated space. For a 1,500 sq. ft. house the estimated cost would be $1,900 to $2,300. That’s considerably less than the cost for a complete forced air system.

Disadvantages of Radiant Heat Panels

The major limitation of radiant heat panels is the absence of a cooling function. Installing a ducted central air conditioner would undermine many of the advantages of using radiant panels.

One way around this would be to install a mini-split air conditioning system. The mini-split, like radiant panels, is also a cost effective retrofit solution and can be zoned to cool only occupied rooms.

If controlling heating costs is your primary concern, radiant heat panels offer an easy, cost effective and healthy way to retrofit your home with comfortable, reliable heat.

Got Attic Mold? Lets Talk Energy Conservation!

by: Mark D. Tyrol, P.E.

It happens to countless homeowners around the end of the year – you make the annual visit to your attic to collect the holiday decorations and what do you find? Spots and blotches covering the bottom of the roof sheathing. Worse yet – it turns out to be attic mold!

What does energy conservation have to do with mold in the attic? Well if you take a step back and consider how the house behaves as system, they are often directly related.

Building science experts have long been using the “house as a system” approach to diagnose the cause and origin of building defects.

For example, ice dams. These are often caused by warm air seeping into the attic which causes the snow and ice on the roof to melt. The water drains to the edge of the roof (which is colder than the rest of the roof because it is an overhang and not warmed by the attic), freezes and creates an ice dam. As this process is repeated daily, the ice dam grows larger. Eventually water is forced under a shingle where it can seep into the house.

Understanding how the house behaves as a system and the various causes and effects is necessary to diagnose most building related problems.

But how about that attic mold? How did it get there?

Mold requires chronic moisture to form and to thrive, so source(s) of moisture must be present. Possibly the moisture came from outdoors. The roof is newer and a quick check of the roof shows no obvious damage or leaks.

Possibly the moisture came from indoors. During the heating season, the interior of the house frequently has high moisture levels, especially bathrooms and kitchens. A quick check shows that all bathroom fans, kitchen vents, etc. are properly ducted completely outdoors and not into the attic. The amount of insulation looks good and the attic is well ventilated.

Don’t give up – you are almost there! Remember the house as a system? You know that warm, moist air is in the house, but how is it getting into the attic?

By air leaks! Air leaks are the leading source of energy loss in most houses, and a frequent source of chronic moisture that can cause attic mold. Most homeowners are well aware of air leaks around windows and doors (especially old ones), but many overlook the numerous gaps leading directly into the attic!

Have a look around the attic and you may find large gaps around recessed lights and fans, holes where wires or pipes are installed, even large gaps around the chimney. And don’t overlook the whole house fan and especially the folding attic stair - a big, uninsulated hole in your ceiling that is often overlooked!

These gaps can add up to a large hole that allows warm, moist air from the house to flow right into the cold attic. The warm moist air condenses on the cold roof sheathing, creating chronically damp conditions that can lead to attic mold growth. And the energy loss – it can be like leaving a window open all winter long!

Seal these air leaks and you stop a significant moisture source. And just think of all the energy you can save and the cold drafts you can stop!

Get on the 1st Page of Google For Free - Part 1

Wednesday, 9 July 2008

By Leonardo Wood

Getting your website on the 1st page of Google for your chosen keyword/search term is actually easier than you think, you just need to be sensible and think about it logically. There is no reason why you cannot get your website listed on the 1st page of Google and the other major search engines for free.

Once you have achieved this you will have a never ending stream of visitors to your website at absolutely no cost.

By following some very simple steps you will be able to get your website on the 1st page of Google and knock your competitors off the page in the process.

What is the first thing you should do to get on 1st page of Google.

Do not be greedy.

If you start by trying to get your website listed on Google for loads of different keywords (keywords are the words you use when you search on Google) across the whole of the UK or even across a UK county it just is not going to happen. For example if you were a builder based in Chelmsford covering the whole of Essex and you tried optimizing your website for the keywords Builder Essex you will face some very stiff competition from some very established and well optimized websites. Your website will not be found by anyone. However, if you optimize your website for the keywords Builder Chelmsford you are in with a much better chance of being listed on the 1st page of Google.

If you are not ending up on the 1st page of Google downsize your target area until you do, once you have this nailed you can start aiming at a wider area.

Ronaldinho to Lead Brazil's

Barcelona star Ronaldinho will help Brazil attempt to win Olympic football gold for the first time in Beijing,SAO PAULO, Brazil (AP) -- Ronaldinho and Robinho will lead five-times World Cup winners Brazil's bid for their first Olympic football gold medal at the Beijing Games next month.

Barcelona star Ronaldinho will help Brazil attempt to win Olympic football gold for the first time in Beijing,

The pair head an 18-man squad summoned by coach Dunga 15 days before Brazil are scheduled to begin their tournament preparations.

The Olympics is the only significant title Brazil have never won.

They claimed the silver medal in 1984 in Los Angeles and again four years later in Seoul, but had to settle for bronze in 1996 at Atlanta.

Dunga picked Fluminense defender Thiago Silva as the third over-age player in the squad alongside Barcelona's Ronaldinho and Real Madrid's Robinho who have both been involved in recent transfer speculation.

"The experience factor can be decisive in the Olympics," said Dunga. "That's why several players born in 1985 were chosen, and even the youngsters already have international experience."

Among those more experienced players are Werder Bremen's Diego, Manchester United's Anderson, Liverpool's Lucas and AC Milan's Alexandre Pato.

Other notables include Manchester City's new signing Jo, Real Betis' Rafael Sobis, Schalke's Rafinha, Real Madrid's Marcelo and Fluminense's promising star Thiago Neves.

"There is a bigger variety from the middle forward, with more versatile players," Dunga said. "Players who are fast and with good presence in the area, to take advantage of set pieces."

The Olympic squad has played only twice, losing 3-0 to a team composed of the best Brazilian league players last year, and beating a Rio de Janeiro combined squad 1-0 last month.

Brazil are in Group C at the Olympics and will debut on August 7 -- 24 hours before the Games officially begin -- against Belgium. China and New Zealand complete their group.

Former midfielder Dunga, a member of the runner-up side in Los Angeles, helped Brazil's senior squad win the 1994 World Cup in the United States.

Brazil squad:

Goalkeepers: Diego Alves (Almeria), Renan (Internacional).

Defenders: Ilsinho (Shakhtar Donetsk), Rafinha (Shalke), Marcelo (Real Madrid), Alex Silva (Sao Paulo), Breno (Bayern Munich), Thiago Silva (Fluminense).

Midfielders: Anderson (Manchester United), Diego (Werder Bremen); Hernanes (Sao Paulo), Lucas (Liverpool), Ronaldinho (Barcelona), Thiago Neves (Fluminense).

Forwards: Alexandre Pato (AC Milan), Jo (Manchester City), Rafael Sobis (Real Betis), Robinho (Real Madrid)

Siemens Doing Cutting 16,750

FRANKFURT, Germany (AP) -- Industrial conglomerate Siemens says it is cutting 16,750 jobs worldwide because of the slowing economy. The cuts amount to 4.2 percent of its global work force.

Siemens builds products ranging from light bulbs and medical equipment to high-speed trains.

Siemens builds products ranging from light bulbs and medical equipment to high-speed trains.

The Munich-based maker of trams and wind turbines said Tuesday the cuts will include 12,600 mostly administrative jobs, along with another 4,150 positions in a restructuring in some of its units.

The company has a worldwide work force of approximately 400,000 people.

Siemens said it will consolidate its businesses from the current 1,800 separate legal entities to fewer than 1,000 and take its 70 regional companies and transform them into 20 regional clusters.

Siemens said the cuts were being made in an effort to reduce total costs by $1.8 billion by 2010.

"The speed at which business is changing worldwide has increased considerably, and we're orienting Siemens accordingly," said chief executive Peter Loescher in a statement announcing the cuts, which had first been raised last month.

"Against the backdrop of a slowing economy, we have to become more efficient," he said.

Shares of Siemens were up 1.3 percent to $110.31 in Frankfurt trading after the announcement.

Siemens said it was considering offering employees transfers to other companies and early retirement packages in a bid to avoid forced layoffs and dismissals.

Loescher said Siemens was conferring with unions and labor representatives on the matter and that it wanted to make the changes rapidly.

"We want to begin negotiations with the employee representatives quickly in order to make the cuts in a way that will be as socially responsible as possible," chief financial officer Siegfried Russwurm said. "Only as a last resort will we terminate employment contracts for operation reasons."

The announcement comes even as Siemens has faced a corruption and bribery scandal that emerged in 2006. The company has acknowledged dubious payments, totaling up to $2.04 billion, which were allegedly used by the company to secure business.

The company said it would also reduce costs further by cutting back expenditures for information technology infrastructure and consultants, and the recent streamlining of its management structure and divisions.

For example, the management board has been reduced from 11 members to eight and the company's previous eight divisions have been reduced to just three divisions: energy, industry, and health care.

Siemens said 5,250 jobs will be cut in Germany -- with operations in Erlangen, Munich, Nuremberg and Berlin bearing the brunt of the cuts. Siemens employs approximately 136,000 workers in Germany.

Siemens is not alone in announcing major job cuts. In the U.S., AMR Corp.'s American Airlines said last week it would cut 900 jobs starting Aug. 1, and 8 percent of its total work force, which could total about 7,000 jobs.

The Camp Fire started Monday night near the city of Concow, said Mary Ann Aldrich of the Department of Forestry and Fire Protection, known as Cal Fire.

The cause of the fire, about 90 miles north of Sacramento, was not known, she added.

Authorities were notifying residents through phone calls and door-to-door visits, she said.

By late Monday, the Camp Fire had burned 9,600 acres and was 5 percent contained, Aldrich said.

"A lot of these residents were just taken off a precautionary evacuation several days ago, so for about 10 days they've been under an evacuation or a precautionary," Julie Hutchinson, another Cal Fire spokeswoman, said from Chico, California.

The Camp Fire is among 1,780 blazes that have scorched more than 614,000 acres in California in the last two weeks. Most of the fires have been caused by lightning strikes.
